The Foundation faciltiates two Caregiver Support Group (CSG) Meetings every month, which aims to provide mutual support for its members. A support group gives carers an opportunity to share their feelings, problems and information with other people undergoing similar experiences. Caregivers meet on the first Tuesday of every month at the Teaching Hospital Colombo South, Manasuwa Piyasa, Kalubowila, Dehiwela from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on the first Friday of every month at 19 Havelock Road, Colombo 5 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. A new caregiver connection occurs every few days via the helpline. Those contacts with the community have increased our awareness of the existence of complex dementia care mangement situations in the home environment.
The CSG -
- Support each other through discussion and sharing
- Learn from each other and develop a bond of service
- Share common concerns, responsibilities and group problem solving
- Learn through experiential comments on how dementia manifests and progresses
- Work towards caregivers’ wellness and assist the development of the Foundation’s mandate
- In the long term assist caregivers elsewhere on the island to set up similar services
- Dispense correct information on dementia and dispel misconceptions and stigma
