Shocking new figures published in the medical journal ‘The Lancet’ warn of an imminent dementia epidemic. With one new case every seven seconds the number of people with dementia is projected to increase to 81 million by 2040.

We live in a rapidly ageing world. Already, chronic diseases are the leading cause of death in all world regions other than Africa. Dementia affects mainly the quality rather than the length of life, and is the major cause of need for care in older people. The direct costs of caring for people with dementia exceed the cost of heart disease, cancer and stroke combined.
